Room to be Proud on ITV’s This Morning

Our Sea Urchin Tea Light Holders have proven to be this years “must have” seaside interior accessory. Not only have they been featured in several magazines over the last month, we were pleased to see that they even received a TV feature on ITV’s This Morning today!

“Room to be Proud” puts interior designer Danielle Proud (clever eh?) on the spot in an attempt to bring a room back to life with a box of 5 clues from the homeowners and 24 hours to come up with the goods! In today’s feature it was her job to transform an un-loved box room into a nautical themed living space for a couple from Essex. Not the simplest of tasks, but she made a savvy choice by picking our Sea Urchin Tea Light Holders to give the room a finishing touch.

We have to agree that the room turned out pretty good in the end, and the couple seemed very pleased with the outcome. Considering some of the reactions that we used to witness on the BBC’s Changing Rooms, that’s no mean feat!
Check out the Room to be Proud episode and decide for yourselves.

Google and The Little Prince

Seeing that google did a special homage today to “The little Prince” from Antoine de St Exupery and because it is my favourite book ever, I thought I would do one too here as I find it is a lifetime accompaniment. The little Prince is full of true and deep observations about life and human nature here is one of my favourite:

“On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.” (“We only really see with the heart. The most important things can’t be seen with the eyes.”)

Batman Logo Through the Ages

Loving this video of the evolution of the Batman logo from its humble beginnings in 1941 to present day. When we think about brands and logo’s we often focus on fashion or big companies – not so often superheroes!

Elliott Erwitt in Paris

I have a love of photography and I’m always on the look out for interesting exhibitions wherever we end up on business trips or holidays. Last week we went to the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris to see a small exhibition called “On the Road” which made me discover different artists with really different views and skills.

Whilst I was there however, I actually rediscovered Elliott Erwitts work in his “Personal Best” exhibition. Elliott Erwitt is a mischievous observer of daily life and his favourite subjects are children, dogs, beaches, politics and celebrities. He is a subtle humourist and poet and his work reflects satire mixed with melancholia. His work is really charming and his eye for detail is absolutely incredible. Do you agree? X

Rehearsal Studio Cardiff

We try to be on the ball at Milk and Honey when it comes to cultural happenings in Cardiff, and music is certainly very high up on our list. Having been involved in various guises since the early nineties I wanted to write a post about Musicbox Studios – Cardiff’s longest running and most prestigious rehearsal and recording studios.

Mark “The Bear” Foley
Musicbox was the brain child of Mark Foley, who took over a couple of run down rehearsal rooms in West Canal Wharf (which has since been redeveloped) back in 1990. As the music scene grew in South Wales (during the mid 90′s it became a mecca for Record Label attention) as did the business, eventually outgrowing it’s City Centre location and relocating to a bigger industrial unit on Daisy Street, Victoria Park.
The business went from strength to strength and 10 years later the 3 room setup was bursting at the seams so after joining forces with Andrew “Bernie” Plain they relocated to a brand new unit on Tollgate Close, just off Penarth Road.
Andrew Plain
It took the guys the best part of 18 months to build the new Musibox from scratch, and now complete it boasts 6 fully functional rehearsal rooms (including aircon, PA etc) as well as pro recording facilities, a kit shop, storage facilities and even a cafe!
Such is the reputation of Musicbox, you’ll often find such luminaries as Super Furry Animals, Bullet for my Valentine or even Budgie walking the halls and rocking out in their respective rooms!
Musicbox is open 362 days a year, from 10am – Midnight, and can be contacted on 02920 373707.

Sisley in Cardiff!

Alfred Sisley is exposed in Cardiff in the National Museum Cardiff until 14th June2009. It is truly worth the detour if you are in the area as the collection showcased is about his return to Great Britain in 1897. You can see some of his colourful and moving pieces reflecting Stunning London and Dramatic South Wales Coastline.

I must admit that when I arrived in Cardiff nine years ago, I totally fell in love with the beauty of the Welsh coasts just like the artist himself s and being born and raised in Paris like Sisley the connection feels of course even closer to my heart…
Enjoy! x

Bringing Art to the Masses

Not all of us can afford to hang a Picasso or Turner on the living room wall, but it doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate the joy admiring a piece of fine art brings. But have you ever wondered what happens those paintings or sculptures that aren’t worthy of the National Portrait Gallery or the Louvre..?
The Museum of Bad Art is an Elephants Graveyard of neglected masterpieces by visionary and under appreciated Artistes, spanning movements such as cubism, renaissance and most definitely surrealism.
Our particular favourite at Milk and Honey, is Dog.

A remarkable fusion of ski resort and wolf puppy — stoical in his yellow-eyed silence, frozen beneath the ice-capped peak, Dog eloquently challenges the viewer to reexamine old concepts of landscape. “

Simply breathtaking.

The Kite Runner

I have just finished the last page of “The kite runner” from Khaled Hosseini and what an amazing book!

I bought it in Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, France whilst I was waiting for my flight after being heavily delayed that day and it attracted me straight away. I started reading it and since then could not believe this fantastic story.
I have discovered a remarkable country, its values, its traditions and its culture. I felt like entering a secret garden, full of abundance, simplicity and true beauty in the Afghanistan of Amir’s childhood.
This story is so touching because it sums up true life in Afghanistan’s more peaceful and beautiful time and also in its most bitter and painful period. Life in its deepest root can be so sweet one minute and so harsh the next one… It is truly beautiful because it shows the pain of men torn apart for the agony and the future of their country. It makes me incredibly grateful to live in a country where human rights are not violated and made me want to help Afghanistan to rebuild peace.
If you feel like me about it, please kindly donate to Relief International which helps reconstruct broken countries in many great ways.

The damnation of Faust & more

It was a beautiful evening to go and enjoy The Damnation of Faust from Hector Berlioz on Friday at St Davids Hall in Cardiff.
I can’t say that I have ever been to a classical music concert before although I have been to several ballets in Paris. We were invited by new friends (Julie, an opera singer and Nicholas, a violinist in the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) and went along with it with an open mind.
And what a wonderful piece of music and occasion! It has certainly made me discover another form of art and left me with that little warm feeling within…
