In decoration, it is all about enhancing and accessorising by reminding a touch of texture or colour: if you buy the bourdon pillowcases do not forget to buy the flat sheet to remind the style and the colour on your bed so it looks finished or complete.
However remember that no Milk & Honey® Beds are complete without the decorative pillow and cushion cover!

Great decorating tips from the experts

Playing with shades and textures is such fun in the world of interior design and deco. Decorating should be fun and incredibly enjoyable, if you are unsure or are looking for ideas, tips and inspiration, I would recommend you to visit the Housetohome website which is an Ali Baba Cavern when you are looking for expert advice.

I particularly loved the clever and chic hints from their rubric “style idea” especially the two latest subjects the first one being about rejuvenating your living room and the second one being about beautifying your home with gorgeous natural materials that as you well know I am very fond of!

They have chosen linen and stone which are working in harmony together. As every natural material the possibilities are endless with them and it is what I find so special about them whether it is stone, wood, cotton, wool or linen etc., they all embellish one another so well, there is nothing like this! What a great website!

Farrow and Ball linked with Happiness

I must admit that I have always loved nice things and with time, trust me it does not get better, it gets worse!
One of my friends had repainted some of his rooms and it looks extremely refined yet terribly subtle and understated.
He used the Farrow and Ball paint “London Stone” colour for neutralising and bringing a touch of warmth to his gallery. What a great pick, it really works, giving a very polished earthy look that you could easily find in a beautiful hotel reception room – cosy yet very chic!
For his dining room he has used the Farrow and Ball “Saxon Green” which I was totally blown away by. Saxon Green is a deep rich green with a touch of Bronze; it is a beautiful classic that will put some depth in a room but keeping it somehow extremely soft. It is incredible how it sets off the wood of the furniture and transforms the room into an intimate yet exquisite living space.

I personally adore their “Pavilion Grey” for a bedroom used with “Strong White” for a clean contrast, it would look simply exceptional with the Milk and Honey Sucre Glace Silver finish bedding that would very delicately pick up the two shades and bring them alive. A true Robert Doisneau enchanting snap! I truly believe that you get what you pay for, and quality over quantity is essential to my life. It brings so much enjoyment for so much longer and is one of many of my tips to happiness; it works for me so I thought it would be nice to share it.

The Milk and Honey Brand Concept #1

I come across all types of people during my working day, and one of the most popular questions is how did I come across the name, Milk and Honey?
You don’t have to be a theologian to know that the phrases origins are biblical. A quick flip to Exodus and you will see it’s first mention:
“And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey: unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
– Exodus 3: 8 (KJV)”
Now I know our bedding feels like Heaven, but how we found the name was a little more down to earth.
We always wanted to project a feeling of luxury, goodness and well being as well as supporting our beliefs in natural products so the brand needed to encapsulate all these things. I remember many evenings sitting down with my husband brainstorming words and phrases that summed up the products but we just ended up with everyday names that just didn’t suit us. We also didn’t just want a brand name that tied us to just one product.
Eventually we opted to take the words we loved and use a trusty thesaurus to look for alternatives. “A land flowing with Milk & Honey” was presented to us and we immediately knew we were along the right tracks! It just seemed to fit so well… our primary colours being white (milk) and cream (honey), 2 of the most natural products on earth and a little ‘buzz’ that would set us apart from the competition!
From that day, Milk and Honey was born. As we started developing the company and brand, we knew we had something special. It might have only been a name back then, but as the saying goes “From small acorns…”.
In Part 2 I’ll take a look into more depth at the brand development, and if you’re lucky I may show you some early examples of our logo..!

Replacing Kitchen Cabinet Handles

I’ve been thinking about updating our kitchen recently, but as I’m happy with the cabinets and work surfaces I wanted to do something simple. Remembering back to all those tacky DIY shows on TV I decided to swap out all the old handles and replace them with something a bit more suited to 2008.

The Old Kitchen Handles

Replacing them couldn’t have been simpler (after I’d found the ones I liked and made sure the screw holes matched up..!) and after an hour (I had 18 to do) I felt as though I rejuvenated my kitchen!

My New Look Kitchen

If you’re wondering what I did with the old handles, well as you know Milk and Honey are keen to recycle so they’re up for auction on our ebay shop.

Give a distressed worn out look to anything!

I have a lovely vintage mirror however it was a really rough looking gold, I wanted to update it and customise it so I opted for the worn out painted look…
Mirror in its original state

In order to achieve the “French Patina” look you will need:

- 1 tub of white acrylic paint
- 1 tub of light grey acrylic paint
- 2 flat brushes, 1 large and one small
- 2 cotton clothes
- 1 small grain sand paper
- 1 large grain sandpaper
- 1 tub of furniture wax

And a lot of Patience!

My frame was a 19th century wood and plaster so I carefully sanded down the paint on the wood only as I did not want it to damage the delicate flowers made of plaster.
I then applied a first layer of white acrylic paint over it with my large brush, waited for it to dry for 12 hours, and reapplied a coat until it looked covered and white enough. I would recommend applying minimum four times a white coat over to get a pure limpid white.

Frame after applying 1st coat of paint

My next step was to mix my grey acrylic paint with the white paint to give a soft and gentle contrast effect onto the embossment to enhance the detail of your item. I would recommend one teaspoon of white paint for two of the light grey so the shade is not too overpowering.
When you have found the right shade, paint with your small brush over the detail you want to enhance, I personally chose to paint the flowers and the leaves other this particular frame and tiny touches on the inside guild.
Enhancing the detail with grey
Then with a tiny amount on your brush paint some of your light grey over the rest of the mirror and quickly wipe it with a cotton cloth to make it a lot more subtle. However it is important that you do keep some plain white parts to play with the shades. Wait 12 hours for it to dry.
Last step, if you want to give it a more worn out look, sand a little with the fine grain sandpaper wherever you like randomly to give this natural distressed look and show some of the wood grain. For this frame I chose to skip this step as the frame is wood and plaster it would not have look right but if it had been made just in wood, it would have looked great.
To give the “French Patina” look, dab a little bit of wax on your cotton cloth and then apply on the top of your paint work to give that satin finished effect… Et voila, you have a gorgeous brand new unique recycled and customised item with the pleasure of having made it yourself!

A Question of Priorities

Yesterday I was having a look at what the High Street has got on the market for us on the bed linen and towels side of things (this passion runs through my blood and I don’t seem to get away from it ever…).Well I must admit that some of them look absolutely lovely but when you start approaching the products from closer you realise that most of them are made in the Far East and if you look even closer or dare touching them they feel harsh, which saddened me.
I was somewhat disappointed and surprised at finding out that these rough cloths were actually made of 100% cotton. From the touch, I could have sworn that there were man-made fibres in these fabrics but I was wrong. All these shops, (I will be polite enough not to mention them) charge the same prices as Milk and Honey for (excuse my French) selling a lot of crap to prioritise profits…
You could say to me “Well you are biased”, I will reply to you saying “The thing is, it is not easy to be authentic”. Why? Simply because we are genuine about our goods – when we say it is good quality and very soft we mean it. We have chosen the best raw materials that nature has given us and the best way to achieve it by the weave or grammage etc that human being has developed. We are passionate about what we do so we mean what we say. When we tell you our goods are made within the European Union, we know that it has not been made up by children or under horrendous conditions. Of course we could have chosen profits over caring but we made a priority to care first and deliver the best we can to you without compromise. You could say to me that I am naive and silly because isn’t it what business is about, profit? I will answer simply: “Yes we have to make a living of it but not at any cost and not without giving a lot of thought to what we do and the people we affect”.
We are simply true to ourselves and follow a dream with passion and gut feeling, that’s all and that’s quite simple…

Style exercise

Dressing a room can seem a little daunting at times, the last thing we want is to invest a lot of time and energy choosing a whole theme with different colours, textures, materials and styles to decorate or ornate a room and feel after this effort, SO disappointed!

Taking the bold approach with soft furnishings is one of the most fun exercises of style. It is a little bit like wearing a really big and fab hat, handbag, or accessory but with limiting the risk to a descent scale. I mean the one if you make a faux pas that is not irreversible!

One great statement in deco is to use the patterns from Marimekko. This Finnish pioneer in the 1950’s in applying their graphic designs to textile, started to revolutionise fashion in the 60’s with the support of Jackie Kennedy herself.

I don’t think we could get more iconic than this, that’s why their curtains or blinds would give a powerful yet sophisticated touch to any room.

I personally love the “Ruusupuu 8” design to drape as curtains in a bedroom. It would look stunning with some pure white sheets embellished with a touch of soft strawberry sherbet pink border like the Sucre Glace Pink finish range.

To give the designer look, add the cushions in “Ruusupuu 8” design and the cushions in Sucre Glace Pink finish. Voila, a gorgeous striking boudoir ready to go!

Deco Tip: Update a Fireplace

Posted on : 07-04-2008 | By : Milk and Honey | In : Interiors & Deco

At this time of the year we feel like having an update in our interiors. I started the process this weekend by changing the tired 80’s dark green looking tiles around our fireplace.

The thing is I like the fireplace itself and the surround so it seemed silly and a waste to change the whole thing! That’s how I had the idea to just replace the tiles. During the weekend, I bought some beautiful real stones tiles made of stunning slate and decided to use these instead. It looks stunning and it is so effective! I would recommend it anytime.
I am also looking for some vintage door handles especially art deco if possible, they need to be 192mm and I would need 18 or a minimum of 7 and in another style 11. So if anyone of you have some you are about to throw out, please let me know.
