Finnish Sauna

I am going to the sauna, I have been waiting for this all week! Since I have been to Helsinki in Finland I have never forgotten this amazing experience which has left me so relaxed and in peace with myself.
The sauna is a very important part of the Finnish culture. Finns think of saunas not as a luxury, but as a necessity. Before the rise of public health care, almost all Finnish mothers gave birth in saunas as it is one of the most sterile places.
If you feel exhausted from a hard working week, trust me this is pure pampering, your batteries will be totally recharged. You will feel soothed and so healthy…

Milk and Honey old duvets and pillows: biodegradable and good fertilizer for your flowers!

We like to recycle as much as possible that’s why we thought it was important to use natural fillings and casings for our duvets and pillows to offer a solution when the lifespan of our product is coming to an end.
As Milk and Honey feathers or down bedding articles are 100% natural, and as feathers are an excellent flower fertilizer, your worn out Milk and Honey products can (believe it or not) be easily be buried in the garden, unlike synthetic pillows or duvets which will sadly end up as landfill.
Its always hard to let go of your favourite duvet or pillow, but at least this way you can pass on the Milk and Honey goodness and see the benefit year after year in your garden.

Spring Cleaning

As the longer days are slowly starting to show their lovely little faces and as the sun is becoming brighter and warmer, something strange (which I am sure is perfectly explained scientifically) is happening to me…

The urge for clearing all the clutter accumulated during the long months of winter has arrived! It is something quite frenetic when it strikes me, it has to be done IMMEDIATELY. Marketing departments must have read me like a book as I received 3 bags (Salvation Army, Scope and National Blind Childrens Society) to collect my unwanted clutter through my letter box yesterday…

Perfect – the bags are now ready and what a lovely feeling to know you have not thrown away anything unwanted but instead it will be recycled: One’s man rubbish is another man treasure.

Comissioning artwork?

Pierre SoulagesThis morning as every morning, I was reading the Times Online and noticed this article: “Commissioning artworks to go with the decor: naff or interior design genius? “. Being a purist and having a fascination since early age for modern art, I will have to say that I find it a little shallow to commission your art in order for it to fit a colour scheme. Personally, I believe that you should buy a piece of art because you simply and truly love it, it should make you feel something extraordinary and you should enjoy looking at it time and time again…
However, if Damien Hirst or Banksy want to commission a piece for my living room, they only have to ask!

No Sweat

I found this fashion brand which prides itself in making all their clothes in LA in an ethical, pure and transparent way.

I love the philosophy of American apparel: “For us “sweatshop free” was never about criticizing other business models; it was about attempting something new. It comes down to this: not blindly outsourcing, but rather knowing the faces of our workers and providing them the opportunity to make a fair wage.”

Bull Denim Woven Cotton Cities Bag

I really love their Bull Denim Woven Cotton Cities Bag, a very cool and stylish way to shop and say NO to plastic carrier bags…

Tip 1: Fluffy towels

There is nothing worse than coming out of a lovely long shower or bath, only to find your towels are as coarse as sandpaper!

For my towels to be extremely fluffy and cosy, I personally wash them with a non bio washing powder or gel, use a tiny amount of fabric softener (but not too much as it will glaze the towel cotton loops with a coat of silicon-like substance which will reduce therefore the absorbency of the towel). Then I dry my Milk and honey Waffle towels on the line and when they are almost ready I put them in the tumble dryer for 5-10 minutes on a low heat to give that little extra softness and downy feel.
Et voila! Pure delight…

A Chocoholics Dream

Don’t you just hate being woken up by the postman at 6:30 in the morning?

Usually I stumble downstairs in my inside-out dressing gown only to find out I was either too slow and he’s gone or the ‘special delivery’ letter is anything but special.

However, I was proven wrong this Saturday when the postman presented me with a big box from The Chocolate Trading Co full of some of the most divine chocolates I have ever tasted! German marzipan and Italian desert buscuits that lasted about an hour (after I had gone back to bed of course).

Not only was I blown away by the quality of the chocolates, I also noticed that the box that they had arrived in had a sticker on it saying (something along the lines of) “Whenever we can we will aim to re-use this box for further deliveries if in a good condition”. What a fantastic idea. Although I didnt send the box back to them, I have already re-used it for a Milk and Honey delivery.

Apologies in advance to the recipient who mistakes our bed linen for chocolate ;-)

The French Connection?

On Friday, I found a fantastic website by chance! Bodie and Fou sells stylish and unique items for interiors from the EU. I personally love the gorgeous ceramic lamp “Belle” designed by Flavia Del Pra, it is truly different but so warm, it is to me a special piece that finishes off a room ( like a sublime piece of jewellery on a very simple outfit…).

I spoke with Karine Kong (one of the two sisters who owns Bodie and Fou and Where did you buy that) and I still think it was incredible because we seemed to have so much in common (one of them being French) although we never met. Perhaps it is simply about a state of mind and sharing views, taste and ideas. Who knows?

Anyway we simply got on very well and it has left me with such a lovely feeling!

With so many ‘directories’ online nowadays, it can often be very difficult to find the right site when looking for interiors news, advice and recommendations…

Nicky, the founder of Wales at Home has listed all that for us. I love the idea of a directory combined with news about interiors, ideas etc, and unlike so many other sites it is updated regularly and always has new tips. Nicky is a freelance interior journalist (not to mention a highly regarded mydeco blogger) and will be welcoming you as if you have always known her as a good friend.
